Below, we detail which mixes are prohibited:
Chlorine and hot water: combining these two is a serious mistake. Our mixture can turn into chlorine gas, which "affects the respiratory system, causing coughing, chest pain, and even water retention in the lungs," warns the organization.
Chlorine and alcohol (liquid or gel): this is another dangerous combination, as it can release chloroform, which besides causing dizziness and nausea can damage the nervous system.
Chlorine and hydrogen peroxide: mixing these two chemicals can generate chlorates and chlorine gas, toxic compounds that affect mucous membranes such as the eyes, throat, and lungs.
Chlorine and vinegar: mixing chlorine and vinegar also harms mucous membranes by releasing peracetic acid and chlorine gas.
Chlorine and ammonia: combining a chlorine product with ammonia is truly dangerous, as there is a risk of creating chloramine due to ignorance. This chemical "causes lung and liver damage" and in mild cases "headaches and difficulty breathing," explains Profeco.
Chlorine and citric acids: these two compounds combined can produce chlorine gas, which being toxic can seriously affect the respiratory system. Those who inhale it may even retain fluid in their lungs.
Chlorine and muriatic acid: combining them can also release chlorine gas.
